Some of our recent accomplishments

Full Plane House

MULTNOMAH COUNTY C.R.O.P.S. FEASIBILITY STUDY
In spring of 2009, Fiddlehead was hired by the office of County Commissioner Jeff Cogen to research the feasibility of growing fresh vegetables for the local food bank on surplus county land. Our work focused on providing information on specific growing strategies as well as helping surmount the organizational and bureaucratic hurdles. Our report included food production and processing recommendations, instructions for land use applications, road improvement requirements, budgeting start-up and operating costs, staffing options, and identifying community partners and county resources. By winter of 2009, the CROPS program had harvested more than 12,000 lbs. of high quality organic produce valued at more than $25,000.

PORTLAND CITY HALL GARDEN
In partnership with the Portland Food Policy Council, Fiddlehead managed the installation of the edible garden at Portland’s City Hall, officially named the Better Together Garden.

CITY OF PORTLAND/MULTNOMAH FOOD POLICY COUNCIL MEMBER
In 2010 Fiddlehead co-owner David Barmon began a two-year term as a member of the Portland Food Policy Council, a citizen-based advisory council to the City of Portland and Multnomah County. The FPC focuses on topics relating to food production, land use planning, health, and nutrition.

CYAN EDIBLE GARDEN
Fiddlehead was hired by developer Gerding-Edlen to design a 900 square foot edible garden in the courtyard of the Cyan, one of the greenest apartment buildings in Portland. We worked in partnership with landscape architecture firm Walker-Macy, creating a functional, low-maintenance, and beautiful space.

CHINOOK MEMORIAL-PORT OF CAMAS, WASHINGTON STATE
In partnership with the Grand Ronde Tribe of Oregon we created a design for native and culturally important plants to the indigenous people of the lower-Columbia River. The plants selected have long been valued for building, medicine, and food.

RICHMOND ELEMENTARY SCHOOL GARDEN
In 2008 we removed part of the soccer field at Richmond Elementary to install a school garden for vegetable beds and native plant area. The fence wood came from a redwood tree harvested in Beaverton, OR, and the kiosk wood from NE Portland. The project was funded by a grant from the Bureau of Environmental Services.
